Bento for my Boy

Snapshots of a few bentos for The Boy.  I’m trying really hard to get some variety in there. Last year, he ate way too many cheese sandwiches.  I’m just thrilled there’s no one in his class this year making fun of him for eating sushi. Brown rice and avocado sushi, organic strawberries, a fresh plum, […]

Summer Cooking :: Black Bean Salad

Quick!  Make this salad before Summer is over!  This is one of my favorite summer recipes.  If I ever go to a potluck during the summer, you will usually see me with a large bowl of this in my hands. ROSE’S BLACK BEAN SALAD 2 cobs of fresh corn 1 can of black beans, drained […]

Random Thoughts and a Late Summer Dinner

I’ve been off the computer lately.  Trying to be anyway.  I see what a huge timesuck it can be for me, so sometimes I try to take a step back from it when I see I am turning it on too many times a day.  It feels good.  So there’s been a lot of time […]

Lunch Today

A delicious lunch for one today.  Tofu, spring roll, and peanut sauce.  All home made.  Delicious. Sometimes I love to eat alone.

A Pretty Good Sick Day, or, Cookie Love Part 3

We are all a little under the weather here. I made Andy’s Chicken Soup, which is still my all-time favorite chicken soup. And while I was at it with the comfort food, I made some fresh-from-the-oven chocolate chip cookies.  No, in my sickened state, I was not slaving away making fresh cookies.  Earlier in the […]

Chicken With Tomatoes and Lime

With tomatoes and fresh herbs being gorgeous and cheap at the farmer’s market right now, I’ve been making this dish quite a lot lately.  The inspiration came from Jamie’s Dinners by Jamie Oliver, which The Daddy Monkey gave me for my birthday.  I’m sure his reasons for giving me a cookbook filled with gorgeous food […]

Gazpacho Overload (not possible)

Hard to believe it’s gazpacho weather again.  I scored some less-than-perfect organic tomatoes for really cheap at The Farm on Friday and we’ve devoured two huge batches of gazpacho since. Here’s Sunday’s lunch.  Gazpacho and frittata made from Friday’s leftovers–chicken sausage, grilled zucchini, tomato and cheddar. Looks almost like this meal.  I have to admit […]

Fresh Bread for Sick Tummies

I was a long week, last week.  We all had the flu in one form or another. It’s times like this that I am grateful for the bread machine, which allows me to serve fresh baked bread with very little effort.  I’m all about making it by hand, but sometimes it’s more about the finished […]

Delicata and Kale Soup

I am so in love with this soup right now.  This is the soup I served at The Girl’s birthday party, and it is so easy to make, it’s like some kind of miracle. I am absolutely in love with delicata squash, but you could use any winter squash you like: butternut, acorn, or what […]

Special Delivery

I delivered two special packages today. One was full of home made brownies and was hand delivered. A little bear says, “thank you.” The other package was delivered to the post office, to be sent to a cold, cold place. I drew a bit of sunshine for them, on one of The Girl’s paintings.
